Angistri, or Agistri, is a small island dressed in
pine and just an hours boat-ride away from Athens. It is one of
the six islands known as the Saronic islands, which are mostly visited
by Greek tourists. It is too much to say that foreign tourists are
rare, but they are not common either - the ones that do come here
are usually British or German. The attraction lies in the small-scale
tourism that blends in nicely with a rich Greek everyday life. The
closeness to Athens is a big plus. The sun and bathing together
with the big city pulse makes a splendid combination.
Getting
here
Grab a flight seat to Athens and then continue
by flying boat from the harbour city Piraeus. There are several
daily departures.
Getting
around
Since the distances are short most people choose to go
by foot or bicycle. You can rent scooters and bikes in Skala
as well as in Megalochori. Those who wish to rest their legs
and feet can take the bus.
Villages
There are only three villages on Angistri: Megalochori,
Skala and Limenaria. Seen to the number of inhabitants the largest
village is Megalochori (also known as Milos). It is quite
a charming village with its whitewashed houses in labyrinthine alleys,
not unlike many villages in the Cyclades. Megalochori offers a number
of tavernas, cafés and pensions. Twenty minutes walk from
Megalochori lays Skala, the most important tourist resort
on Angistri. The majority of the hotels and pensions on the island
are located here. There is also a large number of restaurants, tavernas,
music bars and cafés. Skala is more popular than Megalochori
because it has the best beach on the island. On the other side of
the Angistri you find a very small village called Limenaria.
There is one taverna in the village and nearby there is a rock bathe
with crystal clear water.
