From Paris to Sydney on Kastellorizo |
This morning we spoke again with the owner of our pension. He is concerned about the toilet. It needs to be fixed. We believe him. Really. There is one problem though: the toilet seat is from Turkey and this is Greece, no one here knows how to fix a Turkish toilet. Maybe there is a guy on the island who knows how Turkish toilets work, he will come to us later in the day and take a look. It is certainly wonderful to travel in Greece. :-)
View of the extremely photogenic village of Megisti on Kastellorizo.
On Kastellorizo there is only one village and there are no beaches at all. What do you do during the day? Not much. You stroll around the village, sit idle, read, philosophize, etc. That is what we did today. One more thing you do: take pictures. A lot. The village is extremely photogenic, you don't even have to aim, you just have to press the button
View of Mandraki which is located on the other side of Megisti.
The fact that there are no beaches on Kastellorizo is one of the reasons why so few tourists travel here. The second reason is that it is tricky to travel here. But that is not really true. It is just as easy to travel to Kastellorizo as to Naxos
Beach à la Kastellorizo.
The lack of beaches is not a problem either. It is perfectly possible to swim in the large harbour basin. If you do not want to dive or jump into the water, there are plenty of swimming ladders. There are even sun beds and parasols for those who want them.

After breakfast this morning we went for a walk in Megisti to explore the village of our dreams. Even though we had seen pictures online before we traveljed here, we were struck by how beautiful it is here, and how much interesting there is to see despite the village being so small. You can see some of the pictures from the morning above, and also more pictures below.

Almost everything on Kastellorizo revolves around the waterfront. Tavernas and bars are located in a long row one after the other. The best - and cheapest - are located a little away from the quay area itself. The most expensive is where the sailboats dock. We have mentioned Little Paris earlier, another good taverna is Restaurant Sydney which is located just after Little Paris.

Lunch at Restaurant Sydney. Note the mosque on the left.
The old Ottoman mosque is today a very interesting museum.
We had both lunch and dinner at Sydney today. The menu doesn't have much to offer, but what is on it is culinary and ridiculously cheap. The most expensive dish costs €6. Beer €2. Wine €3. Water €1. If you buy a Greek salad, you can choose between small (€3), medium (€4) or large (€4.5). We took a large one, even though the waiter said it was BIG. He was right. It was bigger than two normal salads put together.
Cosy Restaurant Sydney in the evening.
When we finished eating tonight and asked for the bill, we first received a cake called Katomari, then we got melon and cherries (we also got them for lunch) and finally they brought out another cake called Stravo. We were full and satisfied even before the first cake arrived. The cakes originate from Turkey, by the way. We can really recommend Sydney, good food as I said, nice owners, great location right on the water, cheap, and last but not least: they play good Greek music.
Not only do we have problems with the toilet, the door to the room can only be locked from the outside.
