Pithara Waterfalls on Andros |
There are many beautiful places on Andros, and if I had to choose one of them all, it would be Pithara Waterfalls. It is an incredibly meditative place that you can sit at for a long time. When we were here the first time, we brought a picnic for lunch. Guess what, it tasted good. For company, we had the gurgling water from the waterfall, as well as a variety of birds, including blackbirds and nightingales, dragonflies, butterflies and beautiful toads.
Pithara Waterfalls has a drop height of about 8-10 meters in spring.
Pithara Waterfalls is a hidden gem on Andros a magical combination of natural waterfalls, rich vegetation and a unique ecosystem, with a historic watermill - Fabrika - adding to its charm. Perfect for a short walk or part of a longer hike. Pithara is located about 6 kilometers northwest of Chora and about 25 kilometers east of Batsi.
Here I am hiking to the waterfall.
Pithara Waterfalls is located near the villages of Apoikia and Stenies. The hike to the waterfall starts in the village of Apoikia where you park and follow the sign on the side of the road that marks the start of the path to the waterfall. The village of Apoikia is also known for the Sariza springs, whose waters are said to have healing powers. I dont know how that is. The path is only about 300400 meters long and goes through a cool, shady forest of plane trees, ferns, ivy and moss.

It's no Niagara Falls, but still well worth a visit, perhaps not primarily for the waterfall itself but for the incredibly beautiful surroundings. The best time to visit Pithara Waterfall is in the spring when there is plenty of water from the winter rains, unless it has been a dry winter, as it so often is these days. You hear the water before you see it.
