Andros has a large number of villages, both coastal and inland.
The exact number varies depending on how you define a village,
but it is said that there are 70-80 villages on Andros. Many villages
are small and mountainous, and some have only a few inhabitants, especially
outside the summer season. The largest villages are Chora (Andros
town), Gavrio, Batsi and Ormos Korthiou. Examples of smaller villages
are Stenies, Menites, Apikia, Aidonia, Arni, Aladino, Pitrofos, Sineti,
Fellos, Kochilos are all traditional villages in the interior.
I insist on comparing Andros with Naxos because the islands are so
similar. Here is another comparison: Andros is the next largest island
in the Cyclades and Naxos is the largest island in the Cyclades. So on
Andros there are between 7080 villages but on Naxos only
40-50 villages, depending on how you define a village. So Andros won
there. :-)
