Gavrio on Andros

Gavrio is located on the north-west part of the island and is the first introduction to Andros for most people who travel here. It is the only port with regular boat service on Andros, so you will see Gavrio whether you want to or not. But Gavrio is not just a port, it is also a village, and it is easy to miss as most people who get off the ferry are going to stay somewhere else on the island.

Most people who get off the ferry at the port of Gavrio go on to Batsi or Chora.

Gavrio is the third largest village on Andros after Batsi and Chora.

Gavrio is the third largest village on Andros after Batsi and Chora. It has a population of around 850, compared to Batsi which has around 900 inhabitants and Chora which has around 1,550 inhabitants. As I wrote above, very few tourists stay in Gavrio, and even fewer stay overnight.

Along the harbor promenade in Gavrio are several good restaurants and tavernas.

Although Gavrio is not a tourist magnet, there is no shortage of facilities, and this is of course due to the fact that many Greeks live here. There are supermarkets, bakeries, pharmacies and ATMs, many car and moped rental and travel agencies, as well as several hotels and pensions, and last but not least several very good restaurants and tavernsa. So if you want to stay overnight in Gavrio, you have everything you need.

In Gavrio there are travel agencies where you can buy tickets for Blue Star Ferries ferries, among others.

The port of Gavrio on Andros is one of the busiest ports in the Cyclades.

Gavrio is beautifully situated in a sheltered bay.

Many who come to Gavrio will, as I said, travel further, the vast majority will vacation in Batsi, which is about 10 kilometers away, or Andros Chora which is about 33 kilometers from Gavrio. An advantage of Gavrio is that it is close to nice sandy beaches, but that advantage is also available if you live in Batsi, if you ignore Fellos beach which is north-west of Gavrio. Between Gavrio and Batsi are the very nice, and child-friendly, sandy beaches Agios Petros beach, Kypri beach and Chryssi Ammos beach.

Fellos beach is located about 5 kilometers northwest of Gavrio.

ACCOMMODATION IN CHORA

I wouldn't choose to stay in Gavrio, but I know those who think differently and would be more than happy to stay in Gavrio. But if I were to take an early ferry, or if I arrive late at night, I wouldn't mind staying overnight. I might even have changed my mind about Gavrio then. :-) Below are suggestions for good hotels in Gavrio.
