The perfect day on Naxos

Today we had one of the most beautiful days we have experienced during this entire long trip. An incredibly fantastic and unforgettable day that we never wanted to end. A day to remember in the coming winters. They say that a picture is worth a thousand words, that may be true, but a thousand words are not enough to describe this day. You have to have been there to understand. The fact that it was Camilla's birthday didn't make the day any worse.

It was a day of happiness. So wonderful that we jumped for joy. :-)

It was simply a perfect day. Or as Lou Reed sings in the chorus of his song "A perfect day" from the phenomenal album "Transformer" from 1972.

"Oh it's such a perfect day,

I'm glad I spent it with you.

Oh such a perfect day,

You just keep me hanging on,

You just keep me hanging on."

The fact that the day turned out to be so fantastic had of course to do with the beautiful weather. It was like a nice summer day: bright sun and no wind. If it had rained, this day would not have been particularly memorable.

The day started with me going to the bakery buying fresh bread, and then a very slow breakfast on the balcony. Then we took the car and drove to Agios Prokopios from where we walked along the water to Agia Anna, and then continued slowly along the water's edge all the way to Plaka beach, via Maragas beach.

As I wrote above, the day cannot be described in words, so it must be a bouquet of pictures instead.

When we arrived at Plaka beach we felt the water. It was swimmable.

We took off our clothes and threw ourselves into the wonderful sea.

After the swim I looked like the wrestler Karelin and Camilla no longer looked like a duck.

Naxos' stunning beaches are among the best sandy beaches in all of Greece.

After a few hours on this wonderful beach we said goodbye...

Walk along the sandy beaches of Plaka, Maragas, Agia Anna and Agios Prokopios in southwest Naxos.

...and then went back the way we came.

Agia Anna beach on Naxos in low season.

We were hungry and wanted to have lunch but in Agia Anna everything was closed.

When we arrived at Agios Prokopios everything looked closed and deserted.

Fotis Taverna at Agios Prokopios beach on Naxos.

But Fotis Taverna was open and there we had our long-awaited lunch.

After many long enjoyable hours on Plaka beach, we had a late lunch at Fotis Taverna in Agios Prokopios. The menu for the day was: spaghetti, tsatziki and Greek salad. We chose spaghetti and salad. Then we drove home to Naxos Town and relaxed on the balcony. Read books, played tavli and had a drink. We went out early to catch the beautiful sunset, which this evening occurred at 5:07 PM.

Sunset from Portara in Naxos town.

...lost sunset. Paros straight ahead and the Portara to the right.

November is the best time to fish fresh calamari in Greece.

Then we went to the small harbour and watched the Naxos' people fishing for Kalamari.

When the sun had set, we went back to our room. It was a bit too early to go out for dinner. So we had a drink at home and waited for better times. Then there was a knock on the door. There stood Rena and Thodoris, who own Pension Sofi, and asked us to come down to the reception. They had bought a cake for Camilla, and put two bottles of liquor next to it, so that it would look like a lot, they said, and laughed.

When Camilla blew out the candle, we sang "Happy birthday" for her. Thank you, Rena and Thodoris!

In the evening, we went to Metaxi Mas in Naxos Old Town and had a birthday dinner.

Restaurant Metaxi Mas in Naxos old town.

The whole restaurant was beautifully lit up for Camilla's sake. We were joking.

If you like eating fresh fish, you should order Mixed fresh fish at Taverna Metaxi Mas on Naxos.

Among other things, we ate a plate of mixed fresh fish that was super delicious. The perfect day was over.
